So… here it begins.

I’ve officially decided to try something I’ve never done before — growing my own fruit and veg from scratch, well I'm going to give it a go at least.

No experience, no real idea what I’m doing, just a bit of curiosity, a few trips to garden centres, some gardening books, and more YouTube videos than I’d like to admit.

This blog is going to be my honest, journey as a first-time gardener. No pretending to be an expert — just learning as I go, making mistakes, and hopefully growing something edible along the way!

Why I’m Giving This a Go

I think gardening feels like a natural progression for where I am in life right now and the kind of healthier lifestyle I’m trying to build for both myself and my family.

The more I started paying attention to what’s actually in a lot of supermarket food — the ingredients, preservatives, chemicals, and how far some of it travels before it reaches our plates — the more I found myself wanting to cook fresh, natural, and organic food wherever possible.

That mindset slowly led me here. Because once you start caring more about what you eat, it almost feels inevitable that eventually you’ll want to try growing some of your own food too.

So that’s exactly what I’m doing — giving it a go from our own small back garden.

I’ve got no experience and plenty to learn, but that’s all part of the journey and joy.

What I’ve Done So Far

Were in January so other than prep and planning I've:

  • Visited a couple of garden centres (slightly overwhelming at first!)

  • Picked up a few beginner-friendly seeds

  • Started reading basic gardening guides

  • Watched YouTube videos on starting from seed (some helpful, some confusing!)

I quickly realised there’s a LOT of information out there for a first-time gardener

— different methods, opinions, and “must-do” rules. It’s easy to overthink it.

So I’ve decided to keep it simple: start small, learn by doing, and not stress about getting everything perfect.

Oh, I also created a spreadsheet planner of all the fruit and veg id like to plant, its quick and easily for me to see when to sow, inside or out and when produce is ready. This will save me from keeping all the little packets and will help with future planning and planting areas in the garden,

First-Time Gardeners Plan (For Now)

So here’s what I’m aiming to do over the next week or two:

  • Choose a few easy things to grow

  • Get some pots and compost sorted

  • Clear a small area for a veggie patch

  • Look into complementary flowers to seed side by side with the fruit and vegetables,

  • Plant my very first seeds (slightly nervous about this part!)

  • Keep track of what I do so I can learn from it

What I’m Expecting

Honestly? A mix of success and failure.

I’m fully expecting:

  • Some seeds won’t grow

  • I’ll probably overwater or underwater something

  • I’ll make beginner mistakes

But that’s kind of the point of this blog — to document the real experience of starting from zero.

Final Thoughts This Week

Right now, it feels like the start of something new and a bit exciting. There’s something satisfying about the idea of growing food from a tiny seed, even if I have no clue how it’ll turn out yet.

If you’re also new to gardening feel free to follow along, also check out my Facebook page and follow me there for more information and photos, I'm sure we can figure this out together.
