If there’s one ingredient I always have stocked up in bulk, it’s Epsom salts—and for good reason. Not only do I use them in my homemade bath salts, but they’re also a key part of my natural laundry powder (I’ll share more on that in another blog!).

Creating your own bath salts at home is one of the simplest and most rewarding ways to bring a little self-care into your routine. Even better, you have complete control over the ingredients—keeping things natural, effective, and free from unnecessary additives.

Let’s take a closer look at why this combination works so beautifully.

Benefits of Using Simple but Powerful Ingredients

Epsom Salts

Epsom salts are well known for their soothing and restorative properties. Rich in magnesium sulphate, they’ve long been used to help relax tired muscles, ease tension, and soften the skin.

When added to a warm bath, they help create that deeply calming, “spa at home” feeling—perfect after a long day or a tough workout.

Magnesium Flakes

Magnesium flakes take things a step further. Magnesium plays an essential role in supporting relaxation, reducing feelings of stress, and promoting overall wellbeing.

When used in the bath, magnesium flakes dissolve easily and are often associated with helping to:

  • Support muscle recovery

  • Encourage relaxation and better sleep

  • Nourish and care for the skin

Why They’re a Powerhouse Together

When you combine Epsom salts with magnesium flakes, you’re layering benefits.

You get:

  • The soothing, muscle-relaxing qualities of Epsom salts

  • The deeper relaxation and wellbeing support from magnesium flakes

Together, they create a powerful, mineral-rich soak that supports both body and mind—making your bath more than just a routine, but a proper self-care ritual.

Adding Botanicals: A Natural Touch

For this blend, I like to add botanical rose petals. Not only do they look beautiful, but they also bring a gentle, calming element to your bath.

Rose is often associated with:

  • Skin-soothing properties

  • A subtle, natural fragrance

  • A luxurious, spa-like experience

It’s a small addition that makes a big difference in how your bath feels.

Essential Oils: Personalising Your Experience

This is where your bath salts truly become your own.

Essential oils allow you to tailor your blend depending on how you want to feel—whether that’s relaxed, refreshed, or uplifted.

In this recipe, I’ve used:

  • Lavender – known for its calming and sleep-supporting qualities

  • Eucalyptus – fresh, clearing, and perfect for a spa-like atmosphere

  • Rose – soothing, balancing, and beautifully grounding

Each oil brings its own benefits, but together they create a balanced blend that relaxes the body while gently uplifting the mood.

  • Essential oils displayed on shelf

Our Approach at Soft Earth Co.

At Soft Earth Co., we take this a step further by creating our own essential oils at home using a traditional copper distiller.

This allows us to:

  • Maintain full control over quality

  • Ensure purity with no hidden additives

  • Work with natural, carefully selected ingredients

There’s something incredibly special about crafting oils this way—it keeps the process close to nature and rooted in traditional methods.

Why Supporting Small & Local Matters

Choosing essential oils from a small, local business like ours means more than just buying a product—it’s supporting a process built on care, intention, and transparency.

Unlike mass-produced alternatives, small-batch oils are often:

  • Fresher and more carefully handled

  • Made with greater attention to detail

  • Produced without unnecessary fillers or shortcuts

It also helps support local makers who are passionate about what they do—and that passion shows in the final product.

My Simple Bath Salt Recipe

If you’d like to try this yourself, here’s the exact blend I use:

  • 3 cups Epsom salts

  • 1.5 cup magnesium flakes

  • ¼ cup botanical rose petals (optional)

  • 5ml eucalyptus essential oil

  • 10ml rose essential oil

  • 10ml lavender essential oil

Method: Simply mix all ingredients together thoroughly, store in an airtight jar, and add a generous scoop to your bath whenever you need a moment to unwind.

A Simple Way to Elevate Everyday Self-Care

Homemade bath salts are such a simple thing—but they can completely transform your bath into something more meaningful.

With the right combination of minerals, botanicals, and essential oils, you’re not just soaking—you’re supporting your body, calming your mind, and creating a moment of intentional rest.

And the best part? You know exactly what’s gone into it.
